Egues' statement tells us that women were not free. In Elizabethan England women seem to be owned and not treated with equal rights. In that time women's views and thoughts did not matter only what the father or the husband thought mattered at that time. You can see this because when Hermia tells of her love of Lysander her father did not care. Every time she said something they would answer and then push her aside. In the modern world women can choose there husbands and they can work and do as they wish. Women don't have to obey there fathers once they are of age. These views haven't changed in some was because there are still some sexist men out in the world. In Iran women are still sometimes treated this way but not as often.
Egeus' statement tells us that women had to get permission from the man of the house to do anything. Egeus wants Hermia to marry Demetrius but Hermia doesn't want to. Hermia in this case is being stubborn and disobedient towards her father. She is so desparate to marry Lysander, that she is going to run away with him to his aunt's house. All around the world, it used to be that women had to always obey their husbands or the man of the house. Today that only applies in Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan. It has changed, just not in the Middle East.
Egeus' statement tells us that, back then, women had no rights. Women are controlled my men. Men owned women. Once the women was married, she was no longer owned by her father, but her husband. The men made the rules. This is clear because when Hermia says she wants to marry Lysander, Egeus says "No. I want you to marry Demetrius." Hermia doesn't even have a say in who she marries! That's awful! I mean, she has to sneak away to some other town to be happy! Now, women having no rights have changed and it haven't. Today, there are people that put down women because of those times. And some rights haven't changed at all with women. Like in the Middle East, women are owned by the men. But in most ways, society has changed because women here in the U.S. women have as many rights as men. We are all equal. Women can even run for President now!
What Egeus is saying is that Hermia is his daughter so she has do to what he says. In Elizabethan time women had no say in anything. Nothing women said mattered. The husband or father were the only ones in charge. If the father or husband told the women to do something they wouldn't argue and get right to it. When Hermia was trying to tell Theseus that she loved Lysander, Theseus just told her that her dad wants her to marry Demertius so she has to do it. In modern day women can choose who ever they want to marry. Women don't have to listen to there dads when they become 18. In some countries in the midddle east women don't have have a choice in anything.
Egeus' statement was saying that women had no rights and were not free. The Elizabethan view of women was horrible. In that time the women were more like property than people. And the men could treat the women however they wanted. And what Egeus was saying about Hermia was that she was his property and he could do what ever he wanted with his property. And Egeus wanted Hermia to marry Demetrius not caring in the least bit that she wanted to marry Lysander. What ever Hermia said (even if she was right) Egeus didn't care he went with what he thought was right. He would just forget what Hermia said and went with what he wanted. In the modern world women and men are treated equally. Women don't have to listen to their father when they turn 18. And they can choose their own husbands. And they can work where ever they want and can do whatever they want. The only places that these laws have not applied in that I can think of is Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran.
Egues' statement tells us that woman had no rights. Woman could not make their own decisions. Their husbands' made their decisions for them. In Elizabethan England women were treated poorly. They had no rights. Woman's views didn't matter. Hermia was controlled by her father. Since she had no rights her father made all her decisions. Hermia could not marry who she wanted to. Woman today have almost as many rights as men in the U.S. They can make their own decisions and the views are respected more. However, in the middle east woman are still treated very poorly.
Egeus' statement towards Lysander tells us many things about the Elizabethan view of woman. In this time woman can be treated like crap and the people who treat them like this can will be punished. The fathers get to say who their daughter will marry. The statement "And she is mine, and all my right of her I do estate unto Demetrius," means that Egeus owns Hermia and he gives Demetrius the right to do what ever he wants to her. These views have changed in many ways and haven't changed in some ways. Some ways that this has changed is women can choose who they marry. Women are owned by their fathers until they turn eighteen.
Elizabethan England's women were treated more like property than people. Hermia's father, Egeus, has absolutely no respect for Hermia's wishes. In this sense, she is little more than a belonging of his. Hermia is not entitled to her own opinion. It is Theseus who says that her will must match that of her father's. By Elizabethan standards, a father had every right to his daughter. He has the right to command his daughter like a dog, treating her as little more than an animal. The father decides who his daughter is friends with, what her profession is, and who she must love. This is absolutely unfair. We live in Wyoming, the first state to let women vote. This makes it hard to imagine Elizabethan England, and how women were treated at the time.
Egeus' statement tells us that back then in England women were treated badly. They were property to fathers and husbands and were not treated equally. Egeus is saying that he owns his daughter and that whatever he tells her to do she must do it no exceptions. I think that it is terrible for women to be treated like that. Not being able to choose for yourself and be owned by someone basically would suck. I am glad we have equal rights with men now.In our world today in the United States women aren't suppose to be treated like that. They are as equal as men. We can choose who we marry and choose things for ourselves after we turn 18. Some places in the Middle East don't treat women as equals with them. women are treated like a piece of property and not a human being.
What Egeus says shows that women are more like an object than as an actual human being. Saying that Hermia is his and that he can give her to anyone he likes, shows that she is his "object." These views have changed because today women are considered intelligent and actually people. However, even though the views have changed a lot some peoples still have old people thoughts and can't get past the fact that women are clearly the intelligent people. I believe that men are just afraid of having someone who is smarter than them. I'm very sorry for all the girls who have to put up with this old way of thinking. I'm glad that I don't live back then and I think it would be very tireing to have to put up with that every day
Egeus's statement tells us women weren't treated like they are now and they weren't allowed to do a lot of things without consent from their 'man'. Women obviously didn't have equal rights as men, and women's point of view wasn't acknowledged as it is in the modern times. Her dad is basically giving her a decision. She has to do as her father says.... he is giving her the decision to die! Don't you think that's kinda messed up & harsh?
I think there are still situations like this in the world.... Like what Talon said about the people in the Mid-east and all.
I hope soon this doesn't exist at all and becomes extinct because women's views/and thoughts should have just a LITTLE say in the world...
Egeus' statement tells us that the father owns the daughter just like how he owns a cow. Woman did not have equal rights in Elizabethan time. Most woman got married to someone they hated and the father basically traded his daughter. It also didn't matter what the woman thought they just had to go with the plan. Just like how Hermia wants to marry Lysander but her father will get many things if she marries Demetrius. This has changed a lot in the world we live in today. Woman in America have the same rights as men do. Also if woman don't marry the won't be beheaded for it. However it still exists in most countries in the Middle East. If a woman shows her face in public she might get beat for it. This has changed allot since Elizabethan time but it still exists in some places of the world today.
When Egeus says that she is his, it means that back in the Elizabethan period women were not treated fairly by men. They were not considered equal at all! A man's daughter was his and he could make her do whatever he wanted. Whoever he told her to marry, she has to marry. Once the girl marries however she is now her husband's "property." In today's society women are considered a man's equal. However there are still some people who believe the man is superior to a woman. Today, a woman can raise children by herself. She can marry who ever she wants too, and no longer has to marry who her father chooses. The way that it has stayed the same though is that some believe that females are to be treated as inferiors to men. Even though times have changed and thankfully women are actually valued as much as men (for the most part), there still can be some problems found today about women rights and being their husband's or father's "property."
Egeus states that Hermia is his because back when Shakespeare's time the dad's owned the daughters and the dads got to pick which boy married their daughter. When Elizabethan time woman were more like property. Woman barely got to pick anything. When Hermia wanted to marry someone other than Demetrius it mad her dad mad. As Egeus states "I may dispose of her," it is like you are taking out the trash and giving it to the garbage truck just to pass it on. People in the Elizabethan time thought of women very poorly, but the times have changed very dramatically. Now women are aloud to choose their own husband and aloud to choose what they want to do. Not what their dad wants. In Islamic countries the husband still decides everything for his wife which I don't like because we should have the right for freedom.
Egeus' statment referring to the fact that his daughter, Hermia is the complete right of him, tells us that women were treated very differently in Elizabethan England. Woman were considered to be under complete control of their fathers. It would be that way until their father chose a man to marry his daughter, which she would have no say in. Once she is married, she is under complete control again of her husband. In the book, Egeus chooses Demetrius to marry his daughter Hermia. She however, can't stand Demetrius and is in love with Lysander. However, it is made clear in the book that disobeying your father is a worthy of death or single life. Now, women are allowed to make their own choices, who they marry, if at all and can do whatever they want without the approval of a man. Some people still consider men to be superior to men, an attitude which spawns form Elizabethan England.
When Egeus' says "And she is mine, and all my right of her i do estate unto Demetrius," it tells us that the women of their time really had no choice to what was going to happen to their marriages. Throughout the entire Act I it has been the same story. Women had no choice but where also not given equal rights. It has stayed the same because Hermia's father will not change his mind no matter what she says. Even Lysander in no way can hep change her fathers opinion. It is Egeus' say that matters and no one elses. Hermia has three choices and no of them she likes. Men in this time have the choice to who they want to marry if they can get the father's approval. Women on the other hand have to do whatever the men decide on. Now a women cannot be forced to marry in most parts of the world. They can marry without their fathers approval after a certain age. It is much different from the way things were.
I think that Egeus' statement says that women have no rights what so ever. In the Elizabethan age, this was very true, women just get to sit at home and do the, "mom" things, like washing the clothes and stuff like that. In this case, Helena, being a woman, has no choice on who to marry. It is completely up to her dad. Personally, I'm glad I'm not a girl in those times, because they couldn't do anything at all, unless their dad said otherwise. So Helena must marry Demetrius simply because her dad told her to. Women had no rights, they couldn't vote, they couldn't work, they couldn't even take a bath. The men would bathe first, and by the time it was the girls turn, the water could only make them more filthy. It's disgusting the way they treated women back then, but they did it. Shakespeare wrote in some odd ways, giving women rights and all, but he still did show that men were the superior gender, or at least in this play he did. But now women are equal, and that is the way it was meant to be.

Egeus' statement was implying that women in that time are not free to do or choose what they want. In Elizabethan England they're thoughts and views were not important. In the book they are discussing what will be done with Hermia without caring about what she wants. Egeus states that Lysander has no right over Hermia because Hermia is rightfully Demetrius's. Elizabethan views of women show what reminds me of the old America, shortly after Europeans arrived. Women did not have all the rights we do today. They were basically used for work and having children. Today women in America can do most everything men can do. In some places around the world such as the middle east women are still treated very poorly. They are not allowed to do what they want without their husbands permission. In Africa there are also many women that are 'owned' instead of treated the way they should be. I am glad that women are not treated this way today.
Egeus' statement about Hermia tells us that women were thought of as just a piece of property back then, especially fathers and husbands. Egeus tells us that he owned Hermia. That he brought her into this world, and he could just as easily take her back out of it if she didn't obey. That's another thing right there, women were expected to obey their order's from their "masters".
Egeus' statement about Hermia suggests that women did not have rights in Elizabethan England. The father owns his daughter first. Then, the ownership transfers over to the husband. These views have changed now. Women are no longer owned by any man. In fact when most couples get old the women is in charge. Now women are allowed to vote. They are allowed also to live without a husband. One of the things that has stayed the same about that time is that when women are married they assume the last name of the man. The 1900s greatly changed the rights and the roles of women in modern day society. These are my thoughts about the treatment of women in Elizabethan England and how that relates to modern times.
